At pregnancy week 19 the baby starts responding to sound, movement, touch and light. Now the baby has grown and is around 6 inches long. Millions of cells also grow in the baby’s brain. The nerves now start connecting the brain to the muscles and hence now the baby has more control of his movements. The system of temperature regulation also continues to develop. The baby produces first bowel movement. A white and sticky substance called vernix is also produced by the baby in this week of pregnancy week 19. This substance covers the baby’s entire skin surface to protect it. Brown fat starts to deposit around the neck, chest and groin. The ears stand out from its head. The brain too develops rapidly. Permanent tooth buds start appearing. The baby’s movement is felt at this time. The baby makes conscious muscle movements like sucking thumb.

Development and Changes in the mother’s body

The placenta is also completely formed and continues to grow and provide nourishment to the baby. During pregnancy week 19 the uterus is just below the navel. At this stage care should be taken while walking long distances and climbing stairs. Mild dizziness or light-headedness might be experienced at this stage. Low blood pressure occurs while changing positions during sleeping. Light headedness might also be caused due to rise and falls of blood sugar levels. To prevent these small meals should be taken. Eating a healthy diet and not skipping meals will help a lot. Some changes in the skin might be seen during pregnancy week 19. They are patches on the forehead, cheeks, nose and chin, skin becoming itchy, dark and flaky, a rash on the stretched skin and stretch marks. Other symptoms include pain in the lower abdomen, heartburn, constipation, leg cramps and backache.

Safety and healthy tips

Travelling during pregnancy is safe. Any discomfort experienced during traveling arises from less eating and sleeping. Bloating, heartburn, stuffy nose and indigestion might be experienced during traveling due to fast food that most women go for. To remain healthy during traveling women should wear comfortable clothes, packing lot of snacks and eating frequently which will reduce the problem of heartburn. Water should be consumed frequently during traveling. Carbonated beverages should be avoided. Should try and avoid sitting continuously and make sure to get up and stretch legs. Women should drink at least eight glasses of water every day to avoid constipation. Food high in fiber content like bran cereals, fresh fruits and vegetables should be consumed which will help in avoiding constipation. Breasts also increase in size and areola becomes larger during pregnancy week 19.

A healthy and well balanced diet should be continued to be taken during pregnancy week 19 which should include proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and plenty of water. Meals should include lots of wholegrain breads and cereals. Complex carbohydrates and fruits and vegetables should be included in the diet. Folate or folic acid, a B group vitamin is quite essential and is found in a variety of foods. Green, leafy vegetables are high in folic acid. Ample fruits and vegetables should be eaten every day. Eating a variety of vegetables during pregnancy week 19 provides a good nutritional balance. Fresh fruits are rich in fiber and help in getting rid of constipation during pregnancy. Protein is needed during pregnancy for the growth of the fetus and the placenta, uterus and breasts. 6 to 7 ounces of protein a day is recommended during pregnancy. Poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs, nuts and seeds are good sources of protein. Many quick toning exercises during pregnancy week 19 could also be started during this week which will help to start preparing for labor. These exercises are easy and should be done before consulting the physician.
