Pregnancy Week 32

Pregnancy Week 32

During this time of pregnancy week 32 the baby now rests in the mother’s uterus and no longer floats in the amniotic fluid. The weight of the baby is around 4 pounds and is 19 inches long. The baby continues to grow strong and hard and is now getting ready for delivery. The lining in the air sacs continue to secrete surfactant. The hair on the baby’s head continues to grow. By now most babies are in a head down position. The layers of fat continue to form and the lanugo continues to fall off. All the five senses of the baby function. The lungs of the baby are matured and the immune system is strong. If the baby is the boy, then the testicles have moved to the scrotum. The baby can move its head to the side and develops the sensitivity to temperature.

Changes in the mother’s body

By now the blood volume in the mother’s body is 50% higher than it was before. The uterus is 5 inches above the navel by now. All the organs are pushed in which results in constipation, heartburn, breathlessness and indigestion. The uterus pushes up near the diaphragm due to which there may be shortness of breath and heartburn. To avoid heartburn women should eat small, frequent meals and also avoid eating acidic foods. To help relieve from this discomfort mothers can try sleeping propped up with pillows and eating small frequent meals. Most women might also experience shooting pain in lower back and the buttocks as the pregnancy advances. Other symptoms during pregnancy week 32 include breathlessness, indigestion, and retention of fluids and swelling of ankles, hands and face.

By pregnancy week 32 mothers should drink plenty of water and food containing fiber. This will also help if suffering from constipation and hemorrhoids.

Pregnant women should also keep themselves aware about signs and symptoms of preeclampsia. This is a condition which causes high blood pressure and protein in the urine which might affect both the mother and the fetus. The symptoms are headache, seeing flashing lights while resting, sudden increase in the selling of the face, pain in the stomach, feeling of nausea, vomiting and sick. During pregnancy week 32 women should also be careful about light headedness during last weeks of pregnancy. Sitting for prolonged periods should be avoided as this might pool in blood in the lower limbs. The pressure of the baby on the placenta might also lead to bleeding which is painless and occurs during the last trimester of pregnancy. In another condition, part of the placenta separates from the wall of the uterus which might lead to slight pain and bleeding. The doctor should be called immediately.

Regular prenatal visits and screening of blood pressure, urine and any swelling are important for mothers during pregnancy week 32. There are few indications which are real contractions. They are: diarrhea, dropping of the baby, weight loss, high blood pressure, stomach upset and increasing frequency of contractions.

Mothers should drink lot of fluids, adequate intake of fiber to ease out constipation, eating small, frequent meals to reduce heartburn and indigestion.
